Powertrain Control Module (PCM) "Chip" Replacement
Click To Enlarge! Replacing the stock "chip" with a performance tuning chip, like the Diablosport, or the SuperChip is a pretty straight forward and popular mod on all cars, including the Focus.

A performance tuning chip can advance the timing, optimizes the air/fuel ratio, remove the speed and rev limiter, as well as remap the transmission shift points on the automatics.

Before you order a chip from a reseller, it's a good idea to know your computer's EEC Code. Refer to the first section of this How-To, "Finding your EEC Code" below.

Finding your EEC Code
Before you can order your chip from chip retailer, you need to find out your chip code. The photographs to the right will help you find your chip code.

NOTE: Click photos to enlarge!

  1. In the first photo, open your glove box and squeeze the left and right side of the glove box until the glove box door drops down. It's very easy!
  2. With your glove box door dropped down, the computer will be in sight.
  3. On the lower portion of the computer you will see a bar code label with a "3-letter, 1-digit code" that is larger than all the other text on the label. The code in this example is JFR5, the last character is always a number.. Write 4-digit code down.

Note: Always disconnect your battery and take your keys out of the ignition.

Tools required: 7mm and 10 mm Socket, Steel wool or Scotch Brite Pad, Rubbing Alcohol, Cotton swabs.

Time to complete: 15 - 30 minutes.

Before you can install your new "chip", you have to remove the actual computer from the car. Here are some diagrams and instructions to help you in removing the computer. Once you have your computer removed from your car, you will install your chip.

  1. Remove the glove box door by removing the 3 screws along the bottom.
  2. Remove the carpeted cardboard lower "kick" panel by removing the 2 screws in about the same place as the glove box door screws.
  3. Remove the passenger side lower footwell trim panel, and the side "door trim" to expose the wiring harness bolt.
  4. Remove the wiring harness bolt using your 10mm socket.
  5. Detach the powertrain control module (PCM) securing bracket.
  6. Remove the computer(ECU) from the securing bracket and out of the car.
  7. Remove the computer case cover using the 7mm socket.
  8. The computer circuit board is exposed.
  9. Remove the back of the case, comes right off.
  10. Clean both side of the computer circuit board "port" as per your chip instructions.
  11. Make sure they are very clean, but don't over do it!
  12. Install the new performance chip.
  13. Re-Install the unit in reverse.
