Upper Strut Bar Install

Compliments of myFordFocus.com Forum Member: aussie

Tools required:

  • 1/2" socket or wrench
  • Torque wrench(optional)
  • Locktite
  • Hydralic jack(optional)
Instructions:
  1. Open the hood
  2. Using the 1/2" socket or wrench remove the nuts from the innermost two bolts coming up through each strut tower.
  3. Drop the strut brace over these bolts. If it drops right on then go to step 6. If it only fits onto one side and doesn't line up on the other go to step 4 and 5.
  4. If the mounting holes in your strut bar don't line up on one side? That could be because the strut towers angle in slightly and the top of the bolts do the same so the tops of the bolts are closer together than where they come through the top of the tower. It could also be that your Focus has a few miles on it and it's actually started to "sag" a little and the towers have moved slightly! I had a combination of both so here's what I did. I loosened the remaining (3rd) nut on the driver's side strut tower but didn't remove it completely. I left just enough thread engagement so it would prevent the bolts from going through the top of the tower when I performed the next step.
  5. Upper Strut Bar Install I placed a trolley jack under the driver's side lower suspension arm pivot and raised the car up till the remaining nut on that side touched the top of the strut tower. Now the strut brace dropped on like it was meant to. I lowered the car slowly and made sure the brace remained seated on top of the tower.
  6. With the strut brace in place I used a small amount of locktite on the threads of all the bolts and replaced the nuts. The nuts which weren't removed were backed off and a little locktite used on them as well. If you have a torque wrench you can follow the factory specs and re-torque the nuts but otherwise use good judgement. Upper Strut Bar Install
